Graduate Assistants ( Athletics / HESM ) -Multiple Positions

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is proud to offer graduate assistant positions beginning in the 2019-20 academic year. To be eligible, students must be admitted to a degree-seeking Master’s program in a Sport Management Field at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Appointments are contingent upon maintenance of minimum credit requirements and good standing in a graduate degree program.

These graduate assistants will gain valuable experience in Wisconsin’s only NCAA Division II athletics department. Meanwhile, the athletics department will improve its operational efficiency, competitiveness, and student-athlete experience by building capacity through degree-seeking graduate students.

Reporting to the department chair, these positions will also support the Health, Exercise Science, and Sport Management (HESM) Department through teaching undergraduate 100-level activity classes and performing other duties. The successful candidate will teach between one and three credits per semester, providing an opportunity to work directly with students.

The successful candidates will work a 10-month appointment (August 1-May 31) for the 2019-20 academic year with the opportunity for renewal of a second year. Each graduate assistant will receive an annual stipend of $7,500, paid monthly, and a scholarship of 50% of tuition (in-state or out-of-state tuition). Compliance/HESM Graduate Assistant

Overview

The graduate assistantship will gain experience assisting in the day-to-day operations of a Division II compliance office, working across the breadth of NCAA and conference rules to gain a full understanding of how compliance integrates within a department of athletics. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside sponsors 15 sports and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

HESM Duties/Expectations (could include)

  • Teach undergraduate 100-level activity classes (1-3 per semester)
  • Fieldwork/Internship coordination
  • Office lobby desk coverage
  • Communications/Marketing
  • College of Natural and Health Sciences and HESM event planning and execution
  • Research assistance for faculty
  • Compliance Duties/Expectations
  • Assist with the preparation and monitoring of athletic financial aid (Bylaw 15)
  • Assist in the monitoring and certification of initial eligibility (Bylaw 14)
  • Monitor of student-athlete promotional activities (Bylaw 12)
  • Monitor off-campus recruiting and telephone records (Bylaw 13)
  • Review complementary admissions lists (Bylaws 13 and 16)
  • Monitor student-athlete practice and competition logs (Bylaw 17)
  • Assist with student-athlete paperwork and the rules education program, including social media efforts
  • Preparation and organization of required NCAA and GLIAC conference forms and reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Candidates must possess excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to exhibit professionalism and maintain confidentiality. The ideal candidate will have experience in college athletics and aspirations to work in an intercollegiate athletics compliance office.

Must be self-sufficient and be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Candidates must be willing to work long hours including nights, weekends and holidays in addition to weekly office hours scheduled around University classes.

Facilities Graduate Assistant

Overview

The facilities and operations graduate assistant will report directly to the Assistant AD for Facilities and Operations. This position assists in all aspects of facilities/grounds/equipment management and maintenance of Case Softball Complex, Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross-Country Course, Alfred and Bernice DeSimone Gymnasium, Oberbruner Field, Frank Petretti Fieldhouse, Wood Road Soccer Field Complex and the Sports and Activity Center (SAC). The University of Wisconsin-Parkside sponsors 15 sports and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

HESM Duties/Expectations (could include)

  • Teach undergraduate 100-level activity classes (1-3 per semester)

  • Research assistance for faculty
  • Facilities and Operations Duties/Expectations
  • Assist the Assistant AD of Facilities with day-to-day equipment/issue room operations, including working assigned hours.
  • Assist the Assistant AD of Facilities with maintenance and upkeep of outdoor athletic fields.
  • Coordinate laundry cleaning, distribution, and chemical inventory for all 15 NCAA Division II Varsity teams.
  • Facility set up and takedown for NCAA Varsity home contests as well as external rentals.
  • Serve as the facility supervisor for assigned NCAA Varsity home contests and external rentals.
  • Assist with scheduling of facilities for varsity sports competitions and practices, internal and external rentals, intramurals, open recreation, and University sanctioned events.
  • Become familiar with Event Management System (EMS), & Microsoft Outlook Calendar
  • Provide customer service to Athletic Administration, Coaches, Student-Athletes, community members that possess SAC membership and external rentals tenants.
  • Other duties not listed above assigned by Assistant AD of Facilities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Candidates must possess previous experience and enthusiasm for facilities/grounds/equipment management and maintenance. Experience working in facilities/grounds/equipment management and maintenance at an NCAA institution and/or sports organization preferred.

Must be self-sufficient and be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of video boards and scoreboards/timing systems technology as well as large-scale audio systems preferred. Candidates must be willing to work long hours including nights, weekends and holidays in addition to weekly office hours scheduled around University classes. Must be willing and able to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, cold).

Men’s Basketball/HESM Graduate Assistant

Overview

The graduate assistant coach will report directly to the Men’s Basketball Head Coach and will gain experience assisting with all aspects of a Division II men’s basketball program. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside sponsors 15 sports and is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

HESM Duties/Expectations (could include)

  • Film breakdown
  • Recruitment of student-athletes
  • Travel and operational logistics
  • Organizing camps and clinics
  • Monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes
  • Consistently demonstrate a positive team player attitude, building and maintaining professional working relationships with all departmental staff, including but not limited to the athletics administration, the sports medicine department, support staff, and other department coaches.
  • Represent the athletics department through collaboration with a variety of campus groups.
  • Represent the athletics department appropriately and intentionally through community involvement, speaking engagements, media responsibilities, etc.
  • Represent UW-Parkside as appropriate with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the NCAA.
  • Consistent with NCAA Bylaw 11 and institutional procedures, Coach understands and agrees that if Coach is found in violation of any NCAA or Conference Legislation or fails to report a violation, he/she shall be subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures, including suspension without pay or termination of employment for significant or repetitive violations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
