The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for the position of Maintenance Mechanic.

Our Facilities Maintenance Specialist Advanced workers perform advanced level mechanical maintenance and repair work, maintain and make repairs on electrical, plumbing, heating and refrigeration, air conditioning and other mechanical systems and apparatus commonly used in office and institutional building and building complexes. In addition, employees perform preventative maintenance, make repairs and perform minor installations to HVAC equipment. 


Essential Job Functions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accomplish maintenance, inspection and repair of Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning and associated equipment.
  • Performance of miscellaneous mechanical, system repairs and other duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Perform inspection, cleaning and adjustment of equipment in conjunction with the preventative maintenance program.
  • Performance of other maintenance operations as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Duties are primarily carried out inside university buildings
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, including extreme weather conditions, when working outside, traveling between buildings, or during snow and ice removal
  • Exposure to dust, odors, moving mechanical parts and noise commonly encountered on job
  • Exposure to and use of chemical compounds which may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, application and use are not properly followed.
  • Duties occasionally require the manipulation of heavy objects to considerable heights with the use of pulleys which may be hazardous if not performed to safety standards.
  • Duties are occasionally carried out at heights to a maximum of 80’ or in confined spaces as small as 4’ by 4’

Incidental carrying of equipment or components weighing up to 30 lbs.

  • Incidental climbing of ladders or stairways, occasionally working from heights > 30 feet.
  • Incidental lifting of equipment, components or snow up to a maximum weight of 92 lbs.Occasional lifting of equipment, tools or components of up to 30 lbs. During winter season, constant lifting of tools loaded with snow of up to 10 lbs.
  • Occasional hand activity requiring manipulation
  • Incidental pushing and pulling of average sustained force of 10 lbs and up to a maximum force of 80 lbs.
  • Occasional reaching when assessing equipment or making repairs.
  • Frequent walking at estimated 50% of overall job on a daily basis.
  • Functional vision and acuity to assess equipment, distinguish between colors, function in poorly lit conditions.Peripheral vision to safely operate university vehicles.
  • Functional hearing to verbally communicate with co-workers, determine potential operational issues with equipment and hear safety alarms
  • Functional tactile sensitivity to handle small parts, tools and to detect sources of high temperatures.
  • Functional sense of smell to detect harmful chemicals, coolants and identify burnt or overheated components
  • Ability to work weekends and non-standard hours, be on-call, in addition to standard weekly schedule
Qualifications

Education, Experience, Training And/or Certifications

Required

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Technical degree and/or apprenticeship in HVAC technical trade
  • At least four years work experience in the maintenance field
  • Experience working on heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems
  • Familiar with HVAC and Building codes
  • Experience working with DDC and pneumatic controls
  • Acquire and maintain a valid Driver’s License within 3 months of hire date
  • Basic computer skills (i.e., email and punch clock)
