SOMERS – In September, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Bands will host the Akademisch Bläservereinigung (Academic Brass Band - AkaBlas for short) from TU Braunschweig (Braunschweig Technical University), Germany. AkaBlas will perform in Bedford Concert Hall in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2019. The concert is free and open to the public.

The orchestra AkaBlas was founded at the University in Braunschweig 55 years ago. Since then, many generations of students and employees of the university enjoyed making music together. The orchestra visits eight cities in the US this year for an anniversary tour. All concerts are free of charge to enable many people to enjoy our music. The orchestra with its 65 musicians presents a very entertaining program with modern arrangements of music from movies and musicals, rock and pop music, and much more that brings everybody in a good mood. Enjoy music from Queen, Bon Jovi, Game of Thrones, Mary Poppins, evergreens from Germany and many more.

“AkaBlas is looking forward to performing at the UW Parkside and to meeting many interesting people," said Dr. Benedikt Hampel, the ensemble’s conductor. Dr. Hampel and Akablas received an invitation letter from UW-Parkside Director of Bands Dr. Laura Rexorth in March of this year.

“We are looking forward to hosting this energetic wind band. In addition to their fun repertoire of popular music, rock, and show tunes, there is a strong cultural connection. The city of Kenosha has a sister city in Wolfenbuttl, Germany and this part of Wisconsin has a well-established German tradition that goes back to some of the earliest European immigrants to live in the state," added Dr. Rexroth.
