Rebecca Sawasky-Johnson: Stella C. Gray Teaching Excellence Award

Rebecca Sawasky Johnson, who goes by Becky, is a senior lecturer in the Mathematics and Physics department at University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She teaches Essential Math Skills, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and College Algebra I at the university. Becky is beloved by her students, and has received an outpouring of support from her students in being nominated for the award. While she admits that she isn’t good with words, what her students have said make up for it. Her students have described as a “selfless, incredible, an excellent teacher and individual” because of her “infectious smile” and her ability to get students bring out their maximum potential. Even her students who didn’t originally like mathematics found themselves compelled to come to class and try.

During her tenure, Becky has been nominated for the Stella C. Gray Teaching Excellence award four times before receiving the honor this year, in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. In addition, she has served in a number of committees and organizations. She acted as Committee Chair for the Academic Staff Professional Development Fund in 2016 and 2018, and has been involved as a member in other years. She also served on the Committee on Teaching and Learning.
