Securing the Human: Protect yourself from cyber criminals

Published: March 24, 2014

What is Securing the Human?

Cyber security and protecting personal information online is one of the top news stories featured on local, national and international news media.

Securing the Human is a tool to help you be more aware of best practices for identity protection.

In addition to the personal risk, there have been a number of breaches in higher education over the last several years which have resulted in the loss of personally identifiable information. A breach at the University of Maryland caused the loss of personal records for more than 30,000 current and former students. A little closer to home, UW-Milwaukee experienced a breach about two years ago.

In order to help protect your personal information and Parkside information, Campus Technology Services (CTS), in conjunction with the UW-Technology and Security Information Council, acquired a very informative and user-friendly security awareness package, Securing the Human.

The important information is being made available to Parkside faculty and staff in Desire2Learn (D2L).

Accessing Securing the Human

Login to D2L from the Parkside faculty/staff page. For those of you who have not used D2L before, login with your Parkside username and password.

Once you're in D2L, a link to Securing the Human is at the bottom of the right-hand column.

Participating in Securing the Human is not mandatory, however, it is highly recommended and will be beneficial. We'll introduce a new module every week in Ranger Today, but you do not have to wait for Ranger Today to move ahead with the program.

Module #2 explains how cyber criminals use social engineering to steal personal information and gain remote access to your computer. Module #3 covers how cyber criminals phish for personal information via e-mail and instant messaging.

We hope these modules prove informative and helpful to everyone at Parkside and we welcome your feedback (link to university.relations@uwp.edu).
