He also assisted his clients with retirement and brokerage services. Kevin was an Intelligence Officer in the Marine Corps completing two tours in Afghanistan. He left as a Captain in 2013. He is an alumni of the University of Wisconsin - Madison and enjoys reading and spending time with his wife and son. His hobbies include cooking, hiking, and visiting area museums and restaurants.

Students will do guided reflections on nature, learn low-tech printmaking techniques, and make an accordion book with pockets. The goal is for students to learn new image-making techniques and create artwork in book form. The first evening students will work on observations in nature and idea generation. The second day will be print and binding demos as well as guided work time. Students will walk away with an accordion book filled with their own insights and imagery.

PLEASE NOTE: Students will need to bring a pencil and a notebook

INSTRUCTOR: Leslie Smith, UWP’s 2024-2025 Artist-in-Residence

Leslie Smith makes drawings, prints, and books based on her interest in mind, body, and the way we think about the self. She holds an MFA in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book, an MLS in Library Science, and an MA in Spanish and Latin American literature from UNC Chapel Hill. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

INSTRUCTOR: Nai Herrera

Nai Del Rocio Herrera is a senior artist based in Kenosha. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in art and psychology, Nai's passion grew in incorporating the therapeutic nature of creating something beautiful into a career in clinical mental health counseling. With gaining a graduate degree in mental health counseling, Nai began her career by creating a space for individuals to ground themselves in art and allow themselves to explore different forms of creativity without judgement.

Create custom decorative designs for sewing projects, quilts, or items already in your wardrobe! Techniques include easy batik processes, cyanotype printing, and playful use of fabric markers and paint, including spray paint. Participants will also be introduced to how to creating custom fabric through commercial printing services.

PLEASE NOTE: Students will need to bring a pencil, Washable School Glue, and fabric items to decorate. Additional fabric will be provided for specific projects

INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Marie Barber

Originally from Tucson, AZ, Lisa Marie earned her BS in Sociology/Art minor at Northern Arizona University and MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a full Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside where she teaches ceramics, art foundations, and studio seminars, and works as the Community Liaison in the Arts.

Prior to her professorship, Lisa Marie worked as a university and youth art instructor in the San Francisco bay area, including positions at Santa Clara University and the Palo Alto Art Center.

In addition to exhibiting nationally (with over 50 solo/two-person exhibitions to her credit) Lisa Marie has held Artist-in-Residence positions at City University of New York, Hunter College; Northern Clay Center; Watershed Center for Ceramic Art; Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts; Works, San Jose; Clay Studio of Missoula; and Mendocino Art Center. She has received numerous honors and led workshops and outreach activities from New York to California.

Cognitive and language impairments associated with dementia lead to changes in communication abilities, which negatively impact everyday conversations, daily activities, the ability to age in place, and quality of life for both people with dementia and their care partners. These changes can lead to increased social isolation and poorer health outcomes. Despite these challenges, there are a growing number of options for supporting social connections and better communication for families living with dementia. In this talk, Dr. Roberts will discuss the current science of communication changes in dementia, insights from the Communication Bridge clinical trials program, and practical strategies for supporting communication and social connections for people and families living with dementia.

Instructor

Professor Angela Roberts holds a joint appointment in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Department of Computer Science at Western University in Toronto, Canada. She is also a speech-language pathologist. Dr. Roberts is the Canada Research Chair in Data Analytics and Digital Health in Cognitive Aging and Dementia. She is a founding Co-Director of Western’s Collaborative Specialization in Machine Learning in Health and Biomedical Sciences and is a Research Associate with the Canadian Centre of Activity and Aging.

Her impactful research program improves cognitive aging outcomes through rigorously validating connected speech signatures that detect and monitor cognitive decline, building phenotypes and predictive models of cognitive aging trajectories, and developing interventions that address communication challenges experienced by persons with dementia and their families. Her clinical research program uses telehealth service delivery systems that have a global reach. She is the Canadian lead for the SuperAging Research Initiative, a study examining factors associated with exceptional cognitive aging. Her influence extends to health charity organizations as a research board member for Parkinson Canada and an author of internationally distributed patient and family education materials.

Professor Roberts’ work is funded by the Ontario Brain Institute, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the National Institutes of Health (U.S.), including an early investigator award from the National Institutes of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
