Reflecting on UW-Parkside
Why did you decide to attend UW-Parkside?
I chose to transfer to UW-Parkside after realizing that a private college setting wasn’t the right fit for me. During high school, I had earned nearly a semester’s worth of college credit through the KUSD program, which positioned me well to continue my education. After completing my freshman year at the private college, I returned to my hometown of Kenosha, where I enrolled at Parkside and lived off campus.
What activities were you involved in at UW-Parkside?
I was an active member of the Circle K Club on campus and took on leadership roles within the organization, serving as Vice President during my final full year at Parkside.
Tell us about someone who influenced your time at UW-Parkside.
Professor D. Karpowicz was a significant influence during my time at Parkside. After a challenging sophomore year, he provided valuable guidance that helped me refocus and set clear goals toward completing my English degree. Professor Karpowicz was also then the supervising professor for my senior thesis.
Professional and Personal Highlights
What has been one of the top highlights of your career?
One of my greatest professional accomplishments lies in the transformative experience of teaching within a unique classroom environment, where every day requires flexibility and creativity in the face of limited access to modern technologies.
My classrooms were situated within local jail and detention center facilities (providing educational programming to short-term inmates 15-21 years of age), presenting both challenges and extraordinary opportunities. For years, I dedicated myself to revitalizing an educational program that had its roots decades before my tenure. The mission was to modernize this program, adapting it to meet contemporary educational standards. This journey entailed extensive research and site visits to various facilities, where I observed successful educational practices. I then brought this valuable information back to our administration to discuss safe and effective technology integration for both staff and students.
Over my 14 years with the program, I took pride in securing access to Wi-Fi, laptops, iPads, and a smartboard for our students, which significantly enriched their learning experiences. Moreover, we collaborated closely with our school district to facilitate ACT testing and an alternative graduation test, essential tools for empowering our students. The advancements we made in the classroom shattered previous graduation records, demonstrating that we were moving beyond mere photocopied worksheets to foster genuine engagement and learning.
In recognition of our unwavering commitment to our students and their educational success, my co-teacher and I were honored with the Sheriff’s Award. This achievement not only reflects our dedication but also the impact we were able to make on the lives of our students.
Who has had the biggest influence on your life or your career and why?
Our daughters, Ashleigh Ann and Cynthia Rose, are my daily sources of inspiration. Observing them navigate life in their distinct yet interconnected ways has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Ashleigh Ann, our eldest, is a shining example of resilience and community spirit. As she prepares to graduate high school in 2026, she is passionately dedicated to her Girl Scout Gold Award project, which focuses on making a meaningful impact in our local community. Her commitment to giving back, coupled with her unwavering determination to pursue her dreams, fills me with pride and admiration.
On the other hand, Cynthia Rose, our youngest, is not just following in her sister’s footsteps; she’s carving out her own unique path. With a rhythm all her own, she approaches life with a sense of wonder and curiosity that keeps us all on our toes. I cherish witnessing the pure awe and joy on her face as she observes Ashleigh pursuing her goals. The bond they share is beautiful, and it inspires Cynthia to dream big and take her own leaps of faith.
These two remarkable girls motivate me to be my best self every day. They encourage me to face challenges head-on and push through tough times. I’ve learned that taking risks is essential for growth and learning, and because of them, I embrace that philosophy wholeheartedly. Their journeys remind me that every step, no matter how difficult, can lead to new opportunities and profound learning experiences.
Tell us about your family.
I married my husband, Robert Ours, in 2003, and we moved permanently back to Kenosha in the winter of 2004. Robert is employed by ABC Supply and has been with the company for over 20 years. Our oldest daughter, Ashleigh Ann, is a senior at Harborside Academy, where she is actively involved in student council, bowling, and the Excel Club. She is also a lifelong Girl Scout who recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, becoming a second-generation recipient. Our younger daughter, Cyndi Lou, is a third grader at Ruth Harmon Academy and is also proudly involved in Girl Scouts.
Both girls are members of Job’s Daughters Bethel #79 in Bristol, Wisconsin. Ashleigh has held the title of Honored Queen and also served as the Youth HIKE Coordinator for the state of Wisconsin. In that role, she raised over $13,000 to support the HIKE Fund, which provides hearing devices and services to children with hearing disabilities through grant funding.

Jennifer began her career in education even before graduating high school, working as a reading tutor for Kenosha Unified School District (KUSD). Her early dedication to literacy and student success led her to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in English at UWP, with a concentration in professional and creative writing, as well as a passion for British literature. This strong academic foundation, coupled with her drive, launched what has become a truly distinguished career in education.
After returning to Kenosha in 2004, Jennifer began working with KUSD as an Educational Support Professional in the middle schools while simultaneously pursuing her first of three Master's degrees in Education, specializing in Special Education. Her dedication and resilience led her to a unique teaching role in 2011—educating incarcerated youth through KUSD’s Phoenix Project, a Title 1D program housed within the Kenosha County Jail and Detention Center.
In this position, Jennifer went far beyond expectations. She championed technological upgrades in the classroom, joined and represented the Correctional Education Association, and made the Phoenix Project a statewide model for success. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction often referred other educators to Kenosha to learn from her innovative approach. Each year, Jennifer helped approximately 20 students earn their high school diplomas—many of whom were also receiving specially designed instruction as students with disabilities. Her impact on this vulnerable and often-overlooked population is both extraordinary and lasting.
In 2023, Jennifer transitioned into a Program Support Teacher role, mentoring special education teachers in elementary self-contained classrooms. She played a critical part in transitioning students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) into general education settings and also provided expert diagnostics and support for special education referrals. Even after her position was eliminated due to budget cuts, she continued her work with unwavering dedication as a Cross-Categorical Special Education teacher, where she remains today.
Jennifer’s commitment to education is matched by her deep involvement in the community. She currently holds the title of 2024–2025 Mrs. Elite Wisconsin Sweetheart, using her platform to raise awareness about the importance of special education for incarcerated youth. She also serves as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, Bethel Guardian for Wisconsin Job’s Daughters Bethel #79, and the Philanthropic Chair for the HIKE Fund, helping her daughter raise over $13,000 for children in need of hearing devices. In addition, she serves as a member-at-large for the Wisconsin Council for Exceptional Children.
Jennifer is a leader, advocate, educator, mentor, and servant to her community. She balances her professional responsibilities, community service, and family life with grace and perseverance. Her career is a shining example of the profound difference one person can make—especially when fueled by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the power of education.
