Valerie is a transfer student from UW-Milwaukee. She took a break after her second semester and then transferred to UW-Parkside. She was originally pursuing a business degree, but when she transferred, she changed her major to Molecular Biology like her sister, Sylvia, who also attends UW-Parkside. Valerie graduated in May of 2015 and is now pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Molecular Biology. Valerie likes to hang out with her sister, spend time with family, crochet, and knit.
Why
did you choose to come to Parkside?
Valerie chose to come to Parkside because it is a shorter commute. Her sister was attending school at Parkside and encouraged her to come as well. Valerie said, "It's nice to have someone encourage you to go to class and support you."
Favorite class
Valerie took an Invertebrate Zoology course with Dr. Orlofske and loved it. She worked in an insect lab.Valerie said, "Anything without a backbone; jellyfish, crabs, insects... It's really cool and interesting." She also felt that chemistry 101 and 102 were very helpful in preparing her for her future classes in molecular biology.
What would you say to someone considering Parkside?"The biology department is a good department to be in. They have a close set of professors and it makes it easier to connect with them." Valerie also said that "Parkside's location has a lot more to offer than people realize."
How
did coming to Parkside change your life?
"When
I went to UW-Milwaukee, my degree seemed unattainable, but at UW-Parkside, I
have had an encouraging experience with my professors telling me, 'You can do it!' "
