PLA Steps for Faculty

You want to provide as many opportunities as possible for your students, including Prior Learning Assessment, but you may not know where to start, so the process is briefly outlined for you below.

The Center for Adult and Returning Students is here to support you through each step of the process.  Please contact us at adult@uwp.edu or 262-595-3340 with your questions.

step 1
Learn about Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and how to optimize your class for it.  Contact the Center for Adult and Returning Students with questions and for training opportunities.
step 2
Refer any students you think would be strong candidates and any students who approach you about PLA to the Adult Student Program Manager for assistance with the process.
Step 3 orange on white background
Work with the designated representative to get students syllabi to review and to talk through any questions you have or the student has.
Step 4
Make sure the student and the designated representative know your expectations for a successful Prior Learning Assessment opportunity and what format best suits your class: Challenge Exam (test) or PLA Portfolio (written work).
step 5
Complete the PLA Approval Form when you receive it by email and watch your Inbox for notification of its approval by your Department Chair.
step6
Assess the PLA activity when it is submitted.  Complete the PLA Feedback Form when you receive it by email to communicate your assessment decision and comments.

Download our PLA checklist to keep track of your progress through the PLA process.
