With a mix of in and out of laboratory experiences, we encourage middle schoolers who have a passion to be outside to investigate their surroundings. With activities based on geology, ecology, microscope use, dissection, and soil studies, the environment will be a new frontier for your child's investigation.

Laura teaches courses in Environmental Studies, Geosciences, and Chemistry and is the director of the Root River Environmental Education Community Center (REC) located at 6th Street in Racine.
The mission of the Environmental Explorers Summer Camp held annually at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is to provide an enriching educational experience for local middle school students interested in the natural sciences. The sessions are hands-on and take place outside, weather permitting. The week also features several field trips.
I enjoyed this camp and think it should be continued throughout the years - 06/23

The camp is extremely fun and the instructors are extremely nice and are easy to make a bond with - 08/23
What type of clothing should my child wear?
This camp has a mix of indoor and outdoor activities (weather permitting), so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and wears clothes that are ok to get dirty/muddy. Closed-toed shoes are preferred, however, sandals/water shoes may be appropriate on some days. Camp instructor and director will provide recommendations for clothing based on activities during drop off or pick up.

Begin your rise to the top of the charts with digital music production! Just like today's top artists, you can design your own beats or remix a mashup of your favorite songs to become a digital composer and sound engineer. In this course, you'll learn to produce digital music, record sound, make sound effects, and mix their your tracks. No prior music experience is necessary. The soundtracks you create will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family.

Whether they want to be the next pro gamer, streamer, or gamecaster, your student will learn the basics to get started! In this course, students develop game-play skills and compete using Black Rocket’s Esports games and apps, learn how to produce commentary for live tournaments, use professional streaming software, and most importantly, practice online safety. Student recordings will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family. Videos will not be broadcast publicly but will be shared with all students in the class.

Explore the variety of content and personalities that exist on YouTube and how to find your own niche. Learn the Dos and Don’ts of the platform and how to practice good digital citizenship. Develop your on-camera presence, your own channel branding, and professional editing skills. Take home a plan for launching your own channel with the content created in class!

Explore the world of artificial intelligence to design fully interactive games and experiences using cutting-edge technology. This program combines artificial intelligence with coding to create an unforgettable learning adventure. Students will construct machine learning models that use image and text recognition within block-based coding software to build a portfolio of projects. Take the next step beyond simply “playing” Minecraft and become a true Redstone engineer. Expand your Redstone knowledge by constructing your own carnival with a variety of mini-games, roller coasters, and attractions powered by Redstone. Learn how to use Command and Structure blocks to incorporate them into your builds. Activate your skills and take your Minecraft structures to the next level! Students must have the Java version of Minecraft to take this class. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Become one of the 400,000 students around the world in Model United Nations! Assume the role of an ambassador and represent your country to solve current world issues. Throughout the week you will research a world problem, develop solutions, and negotiate consensus with your peers. This program teaches teens and tweens core skills such as research, writing, public speaking, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Model UN alumni have gone on to become Supreme Court justices, world leaders, lawyers, and business professionals. No prior experience is needed.
