Position Announcement: Residence Hall Manager
University of Wisconsin-Parkside

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for a Residence Hall Manager for a year round position. The duration of the contract is for up to three years.Position starts July 6th, 2015.

Under the supervision of theDirector of Residence Life, the Residence Hall Manager will be responsible for the overall management and day-to-day operation of the residence hall, including: student staff supervision, advising hall government, coordinating programming, implementing administrative hall operations, and participating in departmental assignments.The programmatic mission of Residence Life is to support the academic mission of the University within the residence hall setting. This is accomplished through academic, student development, and community development programming.The Residence Hall Manager's primary responsibilities are the welfare and development of the students within the residence hall and promoting an environment that is conducive to academic success. 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or Counseling or related field.
  • Previous experience working in residence life

 

Preferences:

  • University housing-related work experience.
  • Experience working with living-learning communities.
  • Employee supervision experience.
  • Sensitivity to, or experience in working with a diverse, multicultural population.

 

Responsibilities:

A. Coordinate the development of meaningful goals, programs and policies for the residence hall.

A1. Develop and maintain a positive community atmosphere in the building, and assist RAs in developing positive floor/house communities.

A2. Develop and implement specific learning outcomes related to residence life programming.

A3. Support programming efforts through presenting programs, attending programs and providing resource information for staff programming; encourage student involvement in residence hall programming and other events/organizations on campus and in the community.Manage a budget for programming, staff supplies, and travel.

A4. Advise Residence Hall Association (RHA) and National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH); attend RHA and NRHH meetings and executive board meetings; provide training, information, resources and feedback to representatives; monitor RHA and NRHH budget and expenditures.

A5. Participate in the development and implementation of living learning communities and other programs specifically designed to support student retention.

B. Actively participate in human resource activities related to paraprofessional and student staff.

B1. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate up to 10 Resident Advisors and outline staff expectations in writing.

B2. Facilitate and participate in extensive pre-service as well as ongoing in service training sessions.

B3. Meet regularly with RAs, both individually and as a group; plan and facilitate weekly staff meetings.

B4. Participate in department-wide staff selection processes.

B5. Coordinate and supervise residence hall desk operations.

C. Serve as a Student Conduct hearing officer for the hall

C1. Hold students accountable for their actions according to department and university policies.

C2. Conduct student conduct hearings with students; assist student residents in developing a sense of responsibility for themselves and others.

C3. Counsel students having personal, academic, lifestyle, and/or behavioral concerns when appropriate and make appropriate referrals.

C4. Maintain and organize accurate student conduct records.

D. Implement administrative operations, as outlined by the Central Staff, in order to run an efficient residence hall

D1. Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and special assignments.

D2. Provide on call evening and weekend coverage.

D3. Supervise hall opening and closing procedures.

D4. Provide assistance and information regarding hall issues and concerns, departmental policies, etc.

D5. Coordinate emergency and crisis procedures.

D6. Maintain organized and accurate records of staff, students, residence hall programming, student conduct, and Residence Life administrative paperwork and records.

D7. Maintain regular communications or correspondence with food service, university police and other areas.

D8. Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the residence hall facilities and custodial staff; meet regularly with the hall facilities and custodial staff.

D9. Represent the Office of Residence Life as needed at recruitment-related, Orientation, and Student Welcome events.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of student development theory.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to compile and analyze results of residence hall programming and assessment.
  • Supervisory skills including effective delegation, training, and development, including student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use MS Office including Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Ability to participate in work groups; and coordinate, develop and implement projects.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple work assignments and projects.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional working relationship with individuals at all organizational levels both with the campus community and with external institutions, community leaders, agencies, and others.

 

University and Community: The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is a comprehensive campus of the University of Wisconsin System with approximately 4800 students, 120 faculty, and 70 instructional academic staff offering 33 undergraduate majors and 3 master's degrees in 22 academic departments. The campus is located between the cities of Kenosha and Racine in southeastern Wisconsin, within the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor.

The university is situated on 700 acres of prairie and woodland approximately two miles west of Lake Michigan.
