Animal Care Facility Manager-Senior in the Biology Department - 50%

Position Location: Southeastern, WI

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside seeks applications for an Animal Care Facility Manager, Senior in the Biology Department. This is a 50%, year round position starting in the Fall of 2014.

Provide advising and engagement with college success initiatives for students in the Student Support Services federally funded TRIO program. Provide assistance to students who are first-generation and multicultural students of various backgrounds in areas of access, retention and persistence through to graduation. Perform other duties as necessary.

Responsibilities

Coordinates Educational Technology initiatives

  1. Provides guidance in introducing new students to the animal laboratory environment assisting the faculty mentor

  2. Ensures completion of all required processes before granting facility access to new students or staff (e.g. health center evaluation, risk management, online training)

  3. Assists mentoring faculty in teaching and enhancing animal handling and research skills to students

  4. Supervises IACUC protocol compliance in all facilities

  5. Oversees USDA / OLAW compliance in cooperation with the Director of the animal care facility

  6. Ensures proper training in proper euthanasia technics and health evaluation of all faculty, staff and students in cooperation with the veterinarian

  7. Manages the maintenance requirements of the facilities and coordinates with the director and facility management as needed

Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Assist in the supervision of SSS peer mentors/coaches and in the coordination and support of a network of mentors which links upperclass students with mentors in students' chosen professional field of study.

  1. Participate in university activities, including elected and appointed committees, student or campus programs, TRIO professional associations, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.

Essential Knowledge And Abilities

  • Knowledge of mammalian animal welfare

  • Familiarity with animal care and use committee procedures and protocols

  • Knowledge of online training modules for animal research

  • Familiarity with federal animal welfare regulations

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse student clientele.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science from an ALA accredited institution.

  • Minimum four (4) years professional experience in animal research

  • Knowledge of animal research / OLAW – USDA regulations

  • Good oral communication skills

  • Experience working with OLAW and the USDA

Preferred

  • Experience working with vertebrate animals

  • Experience working with rodents

  • Experience teaching animal laboratory techniques

  • Knowledge of CITI or other animal training certification systems

  • Minimum four (4) years professional experience in post-surgical care and animal health assessment
