POSITION SUMMARY

The Communication Department is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor with specialization in Strategic Communication. The candidate will be able to contribute to the development of one or more additional areas in the department: crisis communication, conflict transformation, public relations, organizational consulting, leadership, and health communication. The department places a high value on issues of social justice and diversity as well as service-learning and online teaching and so seeks a colleague who can contribute to those emphases. The primary responsibility of the position is teaching undergraduate students, including advising students (typical credit load for faculty members is 24-credits). Faculty are also expected to scholarship through research publication and perform other duties as assigned.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Teach 24 credits per academic year for college undergraduate students, including performing associated responsibilities such as class preparation and assessment of student learning.

  2. Performs other duties as assigned.
B. Conduct scholarly research leading to publication in scholarly, peer-reviewed outlets relevant to the Communication discipline
  1. Participate in academic conferences through presentations, reviewing, chairing, or responding to papers and panels.
C. Provide service to the department, college, university, discipline, and community


ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Teach college-level courses in specified areas, attend department meetings and take part in certain department-related events (e.g., selection of scholarship recipients, celebration of student accomplishments). He/she will be expected to possess and apply academic knowledge that is at the doctoral level. He/she will be expected to be familiar with computer technology, including software programs such as MS-Word, and to learn others (e.g., D2L).
  • This position does not involve responsibility for money, university funds or accounts which hold financial information.
Ergonomic Requirements: The position will involve standing or sitting for long periods of time at a desk and doing work at a computer.


QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

Required:
  • Ph.D. from an accredited program in Communication or related field at time of employment or obtained within one year of start of employment
  • Coursework, scholarship, and/or teaching experience in strategic communication. Able to contribute to one or more of the following areas: public relations, organizational consulting, leadership, conflict transformation, crisis communication, health communication.
  • Able to contribute to program emphases in social justice, diversity, community-based learning and/or online instruction
Preferred:
  • Minimum of one year's teaching experience at the college level with evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Some evidence of course development.
