The University of Wisconsin Parkside is seeking qualified applicants for a Police Officer in our University Police Department.

This is a 2nd shift, full-time, non-exempt university staff position with expected continuous employment. Hours of work will primarily be on a rotating second shift (3:00 - 11:00 pm), with flexibility to work 1st and 3rd shift schedules as needed. A probationary period will be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position serves as a law enforcement officer at the University of Wisconsin Parkside and functions with full arrest powers under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant. The principal duties of a Police officer is to provide for the personal safety of all persons on campus and ensure a peaceful environment in which the academic pursuits of the University can be realized, prevent and detect criminal activity and to apprehend those involved in such activity. Many additional services are provided to students, faculty, staff and the community.

52% A. Patrol and Enforcement

  • A1. Patrol assigned university buildings and grounds, residence halls and adjacent property via squad car and on foot.
  • A2. Observe and detect violations of law and safety standards on campus and at residence halls.
  • A3. Enforce state statutes, administrative code, campus and residence halls policies.
  • A4. Maintain an accurate, detailed daily log of activities.
  • A5. Report and investigate suspicious activities on campus and at residence halls.
  • A6. Enforce parking and vehicle rules and regulations on campus and at residence halls.
  • A7. Maintain orderly flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • A8. Identify persons in buildings during the times buildings are closed.
  • A9. Report security, repair and safety discrepancies on campus and at residence halls.
  • A10. Respond to calls assigned and make necessary reports.
  • A11. Read departmental correspondence on a daily basis.
  • A12. Protect persons and property at the Parkside campus and at residence halls.
  • A13. Render assistance to persons by providing information, direction and advice.
  • A14. Report and assist in abating malfunctions of major utility equipment and/or floods, fires or natural disasters.
  • A15. Search property and protect persons when bomb threats are received on campus and at residence halls.
  • A16. Provide security and protection for special events on campus and at residence halls.
  • A17. Provide money escorts and deliveries.
  • A18. Assist other law enforcement agencies when requested.
  • A19. Make deliveries to and from various campus offices.
  • A20. Provide emergency first aid.
  • A21. Write-up motor vehicle accident reports and fill out state forms when required.
  • A22. Direct traffic and control crowds.
  • A23. Maintain law and order on campus and at residence halls.
  • A24. Locate and contain loose animals.
  • A25. Inspect fire extinguishers.
  • A26. Escort rescue and firefighting equipment entering campus and residence halls to assure they reach the proper location.
  • A27. Provide surveillance of specific locations or areas when required.
  • A28. Maintain proficiency with all department issue equipment and weapons.
  • A29. Review equipment in squads to ensure that the proper equipment is always available.
  • A30. Lock and unlock the buildings at appropriate times.

15% B. Provision of Services to Campus Community

  • B1. Open doors for persons locked out of offices and vehicles.
  • B2. Provide motorist assistance (flat tires, dead battery, out of gas, etc).
  • B3. Search for lost children and pets.
  • B4. Convey emergency messages.
  • B5. Provide transportation when required for faculty, staff, students and visitors.
  • B6. Assist the campus community and residence halls with crime prevention information and programs.

10% C. Investigation

  • C1. Investigate complaints on campus and at residence halls.
  • C2. Interview complainants and or witnesses.
  • C3. Collect, secure and preserve evidence.
  • C4. Transcribe notes into written and or verbal reports.
  • C5. Make supplemental reports as required.
  • C6. Interrogate suspects.
  • C7. Fingerprint suspects.
  • C8. Photograph evidence.
  • C9. Issue citations and serve summons or warrants.
  • C10. Conduct follow up investigation of offenses.
  • C11. Secure a crime scene for investigation.
  • C12. Keep current on all legal and law changes.

10% D. Specialized Assignments

  • D1. Complete specialized assignments and tasks in specific areas of law enforcement or other departmental operational needs.
  • D2. The Director of University Police and Public Safety will assign or reassign the specialized skills functions to individual officers on the basis of the needs of the department and the skills, training, talents or interest of the officer. Officers will be assigned at least one specialized function, but may be assigned additional areas at the discretion of the Director. Current areas of specialization are as follows:
    1. Court liaison officer
    2. Vehicle contacts and EVOC Instructor
    3. Evidence custodian and technician
    4. Bicycle/ATV patrol program
    5. Equipment maintenance specialist
    6. SART team member
    7. Firearms Instructor
    8. Taser Instructor

5% E. Apprehension of Violators

  • E1. Arrest persons in violation of state statutes or administrative code.
  • E2. Obtain warrants from prosecutors.
  • E3. Serve warrants.
  • E4. Give Miranda warnings when necessary.
  • E5. Transport prisoners.
  • E6. Provide court testimony when necessary.

5% F. Conducting Training Programs

  • F1. Assist in training of all new employees.
  • F2. Present training programs for department personnel on concepts learned while attending various specialized schools.
  • F3. Assist officers in attaining proper proficiency in handling department equipment.
  • F4. Assist officers in attaining physical agility by participating in departmental physical education workout sessions.

3% G. Miscellaneous Functions

  • G1. Perform radio desk functions.
  • G2. Keep various records and files.
  • G3. Attend departmental meetings and/or training sessions.
  • G4. Maintain parking meter system.
  • G5. Activate telephone/answer recorder and dial-forward line when there is no dispatcher on duty.
  • G6. Represent the department as the court officer.
  • G7. Maintain good physical fitness to ensure the ability to perform a variety of strenuous tasks.
  • G8. In the absence of a duty supervisor, direct or cooperate with other officers as an assigned lead worker to accomplish the needed tasks in order to successfully resolve or remedy various situations and incidents.
  • G9. Meet with various training sessions.
  • G10. Attend various training sessions.
  • G11. Independently assess situations/incidents and choose the most appropriate course of action.
  • G12. Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to conduct responsibilities independently.
  • Thorough knowledge of police department policies, procedures, rules, laws, regulations and memoranda.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • 21 years of age
  • U.S. citizen
  • Successfully completed a minimum of 60 college credits
  • Possess a valid driver license and good driving record
  • No felony or domestic abuse violence related convictions
  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certified, or certifiable upon appointment

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a sworn law enforcement officer
  • Experience working with higher education police agencies
  • Experience working effectively with a diverse, multicultural population
  • Certification in Transaction Information for Management of Enforcement (TIME) reporting system
  • Advanced training (other than the training given in basic recruit school) in one or more of the following specialized areas:
  1. Mental health/developmental disability intervention
  2. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
  3. Sexual assault investigations
  4. Evidence chain of custody
  5. Bicycle/ATV patrols
  • Previous experience as an Instructor in one of the following areas:
  1. EVOC
  2. Vehicle contacts
  3. DAAT
  4. Firearms
  5. Professional communication skills
  6. Standardized field sobriety testing and HGN
  7. Taser

SALARY & BENEFITS

Minimum hourly pay of $20.353 based upon qualifications and experience. This position will earn an additional $0.60 per hour for all weekend hours worked and an additional $0.45 per hour for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
