Beginning in 2018-19, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is proud to offer unique positions for graduate students to gain experience as teaching assistants in the Health, Exercise Science, and Sport Management (HESM) Department while also working with the UW-Parkside athletics department. To be eligible, prospective candidates must be accepted into the Master’s Degree in Sport Management program.
Appointments are contingent upon maintenance of minimum credit requirements and good standing in the graduate degree program. The successful candidates will work a 10-month appointment (August 1-May 31) for the 2018-19 academic year with the opportunity for renewal of a second year. Each graduate assistant will receive an annual stipend of $7,500, paid monthly, and a scholarship of 50% of tuition (in-state or out-of-state tuition).
Candidates must submit a resume/curriculum vitae and a cover letter specifying which courses they could and would like to teach. HESM Teaching Assistant Responsibilities
Selected candidates will teach up to three credits per semester in the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Courses will likely be undergraduate activity course offerings at the 100 level. However, the exact name, type and number of courses will depend upon the knowledge, skill and experience of the selected candidates.
A list of courses currently available can be seen at https://www.uwp.edu/learn/academiccatalog/2017-2019/hesm.cfm. Candidates can suggest additional activity courses they might be able to teach if they desire.
In addition to teaching assistant responsibilities, the selected candidates work approximately five hours per week as research assistants and in one of the following capacities within HESM and/or UW-Parkside Athletics.
Athletics Department Opportunities
Wellness Center/Strength and Conditioning Center Graduate Assistant
The wellness center/strength and conditioning center graduate assistant will assist in the oversight of the wellness center and strength and conditioning center in the Sport & Activity Center. This position will be instrumental in the operations of the facilities, including hiring and scheduling of student workers, management of SAC memberships, and equipment maintenance.
HESM/Athletics Department Administration Graduate Assistant
The HESM and athletics department administration graduate assistant will assist in the day-to-day operations of both departments in conjunction with the University Services Program Assistant, Director of Athletics, and HESM Department Chair. The position will work assigned office hours and support in the areas of customer service, human resources, business services, student worker supervision, and administrative support.
Strength and Conditioning Graduate Assistant
The strength and conditioning graduate assistant will support the athletics department’s efforts in strength and conditioning for its 15 intercollegiate sport programs and nearly 300 student-athletes. The graduate assistant will work in conjunction with the Director of Sports Medicine. He/she must have current CPR/First Aid certification and strength and conditioning certification within 60 days of employment.
Intramurals and Recreation Graduate Assistant
The intramurals and recreation graduate assistant will work in conjunction with the intramurals coordinator to administer the University’s intramurals and recreation offerings. The graduate assistant will directly oversee assigned intramural sports, including but not limited to marketing to and informing the campus community, scheduling of the games, hiring and supervising student workers, and execution of events.
Event Management Graduate Assistant
The event management graduate assistant will report to the Events and Operations Coordinator and help with the preparation and execution of intercollegiate athletics events for 15 sports. The duties will include assisting with event setup and execution, ticketing, concessions, officials and visiting team communication, customer service, and special events.
