Position Summary

The Custodian working in the Department of Housing & Residence Life has responsibility for keeping the student rooms, bathrooms, and public areas of the residence halls and apartments clean and safe.  Ensure proper sanitation of facilities. Shovel snow/ice as needed. Prepare rooms/buildings for academic year, University guests, and summer conference guests. Weekday, weekend, and some holiday work required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary work hours include 8:00am – 4:30pm, Tuesday-Saturday. Hours of operation may change during the summer time. Occasional weekend work is required, especially during the summer months. Periodic holiday work is required. Custodians are required to relocate from building to building on a daily/weekly basis. Indoor and outdoor work is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

85% A. Maintain the cleanliness of the residence halls and apartments, all furnishings inside and out.

  1. Use power equipment and/or manually sweep and clean student rooms, bathrooms, office areas, conference rooms, laundry room, lobbies, hallways, lounges, stairwells, elevators, and miscellaneous rooms.
  2. Collect and dispose of trash and recyclable materials
  3. Replenish bathrooms supplies
  4. Use power equipment to vacuum, steam clean, and/or shampoo floors and upholstered furniture.
  5. Clean light fixtures and replaces bulbs
  6. Wash windows (inside and out), walls, dry erase boards, tables, and stair handrails.
  7. Clean and polish fixtures and furnishings.
  8. Use power equipment and/or manually mop, strip, scrub, seal, and wax floors as required.
  9. Maintain preparation and cleanliness of Guest Suites.
  10. Pick up trash and debris from the grounds surrounding the residence halls and apartment buildings.
  11. Clean, sweep, dust, and vacuum the Housing & Residence Life office weekly.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

5% B. Maintain custodial equipment and supply closets to insure smooth custodial operations.

  1. Learn the operation of custodial equipment and periodically inspect for needed repair.
  2. Report any needed repairs to the Housing & Residence Life office.
  3. Maintain an orderly stock of supplies in the supply closet.

5% C. Prepare area for student living and summer conference guests/events.

  1. Lift and/or transport furnishings (beds, desks, chairs, etc.) as necessary. Lift and/or move beds to create lofts or bunk beds as needed.
  2. Clean rooms as students and guests depart, and in preparation for arrival.

5% D. Miscellaneous Duties.

  1. Recognize routine problems and perform required routine maintenance.
  2. Coordinate work schedule to fit into daily activity or assigned area and establish an approved routine.
  3. Facilitate routine repair of custodial equipment.
  4. Maintain accurate records and reports. Check University e-mail account daily.
  5. Participate in periodic training workshops/sessions.
  6. Remove snow and/or ice from sidewalks and steps to allow access to buildings (weekdays and weekends).
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge And Abilities

  Required knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, move furniture, and work on feet for long periods of time.
  • Ability to use basic computer applications including e-mail and MSWord.
  • Willingness to accept supervisor’s suggestions and/or directive’s
  • Aptitude to learn from oral instruction by listening and asking questions.
  • Aptitude to learn functions and use of standard cleaning implements.
  • Able to read work instructions and schedules, warning signs and instructions for equipment operation.
  • Able to work within a team environment; including working well with other custodians, student workers, and members of the Housing & Residence Life team.
  • Knowledge of proper methods, materials, and equipment used in a variety of building cleaning, sanitizing, and preservation work.
  • Willingness to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, multicultural environment.
  • Acceptable attitudes toward type of people encountered on the job.
  • Ability to use a vacuum, broom, mop, window washing equipment, carpet cleaner, screwdriver, scrapper, and manual cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to tolerate temperature extremes when performing snow/ice removal and waste/recyclable disposal.

  • Ergonomic Requirements:
    • Must have physical ability to move and arrange furniture and equipment
    • Must be able to lift 50-75 pounds on a regular basis
    • Must have the ability to stand and walk continuously throughout an 8 hour shift
    • Frequent back and forth motion of arms is required for vacuuming and cleaning.
    • Must have the ability to carry, push, pull and lift 50 pounds on a continual basis
    • Must have the physical ability to work in various positions. IE with arms above your head for periods of time; bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, climbing, stooping or kneeling; on scaffolding, ladders or stairs; standing, sitting or walking, while continuously performing job functions.
    • Frequent up and down motion of the arms required for cleaning.
    • Must have physical ability to do minimal snow removal from sidewalks and steps using a shovel.


Equipment used on the job: (Basic list; not all inclusive)

  • Tools: Vacuum, broom/mop, window washing equipment, shower/cleaning equipment, screwdriver, scrapper, hand cleaning equipment, kivak machine, carpet shampoo machine, computer, bucket, carts, dolly, ladder, shovel, ice pick/scrapper

Education, Experience, Training And/or Certifications


  • High school graduate or successful completion of a recognized high school level General Education Development Test.


  • Previous custodial experience.

Salary and Benefits

Hourly rate will be $12.50/hour.

The University of Wisconsin System provides a liberal benefits package, including participation in a state pension plan.
